Statement of Significance

Asset type

Row of cottages, probably for the workers of Manor Farm of which they once abutted.

Age

1859 according to corner date stone. Clearly evident on OS 1st ed. 1876-1885

Architectural and Artistic Interest

Built of buff, stone blocks of similar size, giving neat even appearance. Replacement windows to all cottages, but original openings and lintels remain. S shaped wall-tie to righthand cottage and name/date plaque in top-left corner of left-hand cottage, possibly reading: '??LL ARNATT 1859' but too high up to see clearly. Red brick quoins and window infill/repair to same cottage. Blocked doorway. Possibly once one cottage and attached barns, which were converted at some point, but not recently as windows are small and lintels over of old weathered timber. Chimneys of all 3 buildings are of same age and design.

Group Value

Form a group in their own right, but probable were formerly associated with Manor Farm (now mostly demolished except for Grade II listed former farm house)

Historic Interest

The word 'ARNATT' engraved on the date stone is reference to the Arnatt family who leased Manor Farm from New College for a considerable period.
