Statement of Significance

Rarity

Within the Parish of Stoke Poges the large detached homes on large plots of land over 50 years old are becoming quite rare as they have either been vastly extended or demolished with new buildings being built on the plot of land. They are unusual locally as homes built around the World War II. The houses in the road are recorded by Sir Nikolas Pevsner as laid by Percy Tubbs, Son and Duncan (well known English Chartered Architects)

Architectural and Artistic Interest

The house has a pleasing overall form which blends well with the rural street scene. It has a tatch roof and is set back in the private road. The homes in the road contribute to the aesthetics of the area, as Sir Nikolaus Pevsner in his publications of The Buildings of England section on Stoke Poges, points out that they have ‘a curious composite between Old English and Swedish modern (no doubt influenced by the wartime shortages of material)’.

Group Value

The asset has a clear historical association with the other large residential houses in the private road since they were laid out in the late 1930s and believed to thought to have been built during World War II. They were constructed as a group of houses in the rural countryside, having considerable size gardens and of such a size that affluent people would be the most likely persons to live within the houses. The development of large size homes in and around the World War II years, contribute to the wider national narrative of London architects and builders in England.
