Name: St. Joseph’s Burial Ground
Position: Austenwood Lane
Description: Almost a mini-Highgate cemetery, given the number of prominent individuals buried
here. These include: Frank McNamara VC– one of the village’s 2 VC holders; Lady Cecelia Congreve
– one of the most decorated women of WW1 and a published war poet, whose father, husband and
son were all nominated for the VC; Carola Geisler-Schubert – great niece of world famous
composer Franz Schubert and herself a fêted concert pianist; Cesare Tito Giuseppe Formilli – a
prominent Italian painter, whose works hang in the Victoria & Albert Museum and whose frescoes
adorn many of London’s best hotels and several stately homes; Baroness Marchesi – a famous
French opera singer and descendant of Baron Hausmann the architect who built Paris [the
Baroness bought the Priory and land and had St Joseph’s church built]; German Countess Alice
Franziska Caroline von Kuenburg; Italian Contessa Fede Maria Riccardi; and Count Michael de la
Bedoyère – for many years editor of The Catholic Herald.
