Statement of Significance

Asset type

Thatched wychert cottage

Age

C18, maybe earlier. Clearly evident as a single cottage on the OS 1st edition map and the OS 6inch 1840s-1880s county layers map

Architectural and Artistic Interest

Charming thatched, wychert cottage, painted powder blue, that has been 'trapped' between two later buildings, with the small single-storey extension of the right hand one encroaching across the front elevation. Original inconsistently sized window openings, with replacement timber windows. Original chimney. No front door in this part, therefore assume that an attached building is in the same ownership and the access is there.

Group Value

Part of a terrace, though the attached buildings do not compliment no.16

Historic Interest

Historically in the village, from 1700s, agricultural workers claimed via encroachment on the waste land of road verges, and built their own cottages from the local earth in order to provide a roof for their families.
