Historic Interest

Built in 1935 as a Methodist chapel. By the 1950s, the vicar of Stoke Poges, Revd Bryant Bevan bought the disused chapel as the population around it significantly increased post WWII. Further development of the site took place in the 1970s, after the vicar, Revd Cyril Harris had taken over from Bevan in 1968. The building in context of other religious buildings in the Parish, demonstrates how the shift of worship moved from the more remote Parish Church of St Giles' (adjacent to the Manor house) to being closer to the majority of the population. The Methodists congregations diminished. The nearby Wesleyan chapels have also gone (the chapel in Chapel Lane, Stoke Poges becoming the Church of England's St Wilfred's chapel of Ease) and the site of a chapel also in Rogers Lane at the junction of Bells Hill becoming the Village Community Centre. Landmark Status

The chapel has good community value, not just for Christian services but also used for activities, e.g. talks to local Clubs, Societies and craft activities. More recently (2020/21, during Covid-19 months) it has been a quiet peaceful place open at all times in the day. Due to its location very close to the Stoke Poges state primary school; adjacent to one of four entrances to the main village recreation ground and a short walk to the main shopping centre, it is a focal point for people to gather and then go on to elsewhere in the village.
