Shipton Bridge

Location/Address

Shipton Bridge, Aylesbury Road, Winslow

Type

Building

Roofed and walled permanent structures.

Description

The current Shipton Bridge and causeway were built in 1792 and by-passed by a new bridge on the A413 in 1937 (Peter Gulland, The Toll Roads of Buckinghamshire, 102). There have been numerous repairs, notably after a milk tanker crashed in 1932, but much of the eighteenth-century structure survives. Some of it may predate 1792 as there was already a bridge for the turnpike which was badly affected by flooding. The bridge appears in Marshall G. Hall, Historic Bridges of Buckinghamshire, no.32.
