Seer Green cemetery

Location/Address

School Lane, Seer Green

Type

Park or garden

Coherent areas of land designed and/or managed for leisure purposes.

Description

Cemetery grounds, purchased by the Parish Council, together with the adjacent Green Wood, from the Du Pre estate in the 1930's, expressly for the purpose of creating a burial ground as the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church was reaching capacity. Green Wood is apparently 4.4 acres, with the cemetery occupying 0.45 acres of this. Applications to extend the cemetery into the woodland area have been refused (see https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2473490/seer-green-cemetery). Local custom has it that a track was established to the cemetery, through the rear of Green Wood, to provide easy access from Seer Green & Jordans railway station, in the event that the capacity might be required to accomodate war dead from London during WWII. The wrought iron gates were refurbished in 1995 to commemorate 100 years of the Seer Green Parish Council.
