Description

Symmetrical, 3 storeys, with 7 bays to the street elevation. Probably of stone construction, now rendered and painted, with quoined corners and window surrounds. Welsh slate roof and large brick stacks. Designed in a Jacobean revival style, each house has a double height bay window which is canted at the ground floor and bowed at the first, linked by a stone balustrade balcony above paired front doors. Paired windows to the second floor below a small gable with a ball finial. The end bays contain large rusticated archways through to the rear yard; No.24 retains its original iron gates. Above each archway is a canted oriel window. No original joinery remains and 20th-century signage and Dutch blinds have been added to the ground floor. The houses have relatively large front gardens, now paved, with original low brick boundary walls with stone copings and gate piers.

Statement of Significance

Age

Built between 1885 and 1895 and first shown on the 1893 OS map as a pair of semi-detached houses; the end bays containing large arches were added in the early 20th-century. The Building is first listed in the 1895 Barrett directory and was then in private occupation. Converted to apartments in the early 20th-century, it is now two hotels.

Architectural and Artistic Interest

The imposing design distinguishes the building from standard houses in the surrounding streets and the building is a positive feature in the streetscape.
