Statement of Significance

Group Value

Located adjacent to a former farmhouse and opposite a converted barn on a private road.

Historic Interest

Built for the influx of seasonal farm workers in the 1840s. The labour-intensive arable farming that characterises Liverpool’s agricultural hinterland made shants a frequent sight on farms in West Lancashire and surrounding districts during the 19th century, but they are now becoming uncommon as result of agricultural change and development in the mid-20th century and are often overlooked. Illustrates the role itinerant farm labour played in south west Lancashire arable farming in the 19th century, along with the social conventions which distanced these workers from the farmhouse.
