Description

Church tower, built in 1897 as part of the Church of St Paul, an Anglican Church consecrated on 19 July 1899. The tower is all that remains of the church after demolition; attached to its south side is now a single-storey building erected in the 1990s as a doctor’s surgery. The tower originally stood at the ‘west’ end of the ‘south’ aisle; the liturgical east end was in fact due south. The two-stage square tower is faced in rock-faced buff sandstone with ashlar dressings and has angle buttresses, a deep moulded plinth and string courses. A further stage was originally designed but not built; the pyramidal slated roof is 1990s. On the west-facing side is a large pointed arched doorway, flanked by thin buttresses and now filled with modern timber and glazed screen. Above is an empty statue niche with carved stone gothic canopy. The north elevation has a traceried 3-light window to ground floor and a stair turret to the north-east corner with trefoil headed lancets. Low boundary walls in coursed stone enclose the site to the north, west and east with ashlar square stone gate piers to the west and intermediate coursed stone piers; the steel railings date from 1955.

Architectural and Artistic Interest

Designed by Garlick & Sykes of Preston in a late Decorated Gothic style.

Historic Interest

The church cost £8,298 to build; the contractors were Fielding Brothers who also gave the land. A mission church built by Christchurch first opened in 1895. The church hall was built in 1897, and the foundation stone for St Paul’s was laid in 1897. The church contained some good stained glass from the 1890s and early 20th century, whereabouts unknown. The church closed in 1993 and the tower was incorporated into a new community medical centre.
