Many of the open and green spaces across South Yorkshire are not as natural as you may think. These areas were often designed and laid out, or developed over time, for recreational purposes and for quiet enjoyment. The landscapes created reflect the ideas and tastes of the time. Historic parks & gardens that are recognised as being of particular significance will be designated for protection by inclusion on the national register.
Any undesignated historic designed landscape can be nominated for inclusion on the Local Heritage List. This includes municipal parks and gardens, cemeteries, private gardens, country estates, urban squares and other landscapes.
