Description

This Historic Park and Garden was identified and considered Locally Listed under the Sheffield UDP and UDP Policy BE21, which can be seen here: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2022-07/03-udp-built-environment.pdf . The supporting document, which contains the schedule of identified Historic Parks & Gardens, can be seen here: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/sites/default/files/docs/planning-and-development/sheffield-plan/Historic%20Parks%20%26%20Gardens.pdf. As a result, the park and all its associated features has been included in the current Local Heritage List for South Yorkshire. Springleigh was built circa 1868 by George Wolstenholme, with the grounds designed by Robert Marnock. The 1890 Ordnance Survey map shows a rectangular plot with the villa to the north end and a large pond to the south end, a perimeter path framed by tree belts and shrubbery to the boundaries and an area of cold frames and glasshouses. The garden is presently in a state of neglect but the layout remains intact with many original features. There are boundary walls in good condition to the west, south and east with swept stone copings and intermediate piers. Access to the house is off Rundle Road via a 'crescent drive' through the original gate piers. A south facing terrace looks across an extensive lawn at present overgrown with self set sycamore and ash with a perimeter path leading to a large pond at the south end of the garden, now silted up. There are the remains of cold frames and glasshouses and coach houses and stables in reasonable condition. Around the perimeter of the garden are mature trees and evergreens.
