Description

The Wath Culverts are two parallel tunnels under the “Bay of Biscay” embankment, which was part of the former Dearne and Dove Canal. One tunnel carries the Brook Dyke and the other a public footpath. It is unique in being the only remaining structure of the Dearne and Dove Canal in the Wath area, which elsewhere in the town has been built on or turned into roads. Although a public footpath, it is impassable and hazardous. There is a date stone but it is so eroded as to be illegible. The culverts are thought to date from about 1790, which makes them one of the oldest building in the area.
