Description
This Historic Park and Garden was identified and considered Locally Listed under the Sheffield UDP and UDP Policy BE21, which can be seen here: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2022-07/03-udp-built-environment.pdf . The supporting document, which contains the schedule of identified Historic Parks & Gardens, can be seen here: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/sites/default/files/docs/planning-and-development/sheffield-plan/Historic%20Parks%20%26%20Gardens.pdf. As a result, the park and all its associated features has been included in the current Local Heritage List for South Yorkshire.
The original villa and its stable block are Listed Grade II . They are now used as student flats and there have been late 20th century additions on the site of the kitchen garden. Squash and tennis courts have been built in the formal garden.
From the entrance lodge with gate piers and flank walls of tooled ashlar and modern iron gates, the drive winds up to the house through sloping lawns, flanked by evergreen shrubs (including yew, holly, pine and viburnum) and specimen trees (weeping ash, pine, lime and oak). A perimeter path with stone edging skirts the south and west sides of the main lawn. There are formal 20th century gardens to the west of the house in front of the 20th century buildings. The terrace on the south front of the house is very degraded with tarmac and
concrete edging.
Some features have been lost, notably the limestone rockery and stone path edgings. The drive and paths have been surfaced with tarmac and unsightly fence posts erected along the drive. The evergreens have been formally clipped, which is not historically accurate. Despite these changes, it retains its essential character as a mid Victorian villa garden.
