Description
Old Wire Mill, Thurgoland - water powered mill site that is said to date from 1624, although the mill was rebuilt c1850. The wire industry was an important aspect of the local iron industry in Barnsley. Needle wire made here till 1926. The mill has been converted to a house (with mock waterwheel) but substantial evidence for use of water power survives, including the weir on the River Don, the head goit, the mill dam and the tail goit. The complex of buildings here includes a range of workers cottages, which although modified, are rare survivors.
