Statement of Significance
Asset type
The Historic England listing selection guidance on war memorials says "there is a presumption in favour of listing all war memorials... The main exception to this overall presumption to designate war memorials concerns utilitarian or functional memorials". This memorial is a quiet, simple monument. It may not be considered to meet the criteria for national listing but its significance should be recognised by local listing.Age
The memorial commemorates lives lost during the First World War.Rarity
The memorial is unique - the design and wording reflects the choices of the local community - and the particular circumstances of the school.Group Value
The memorial is a monument to pupils and a master from the school and stands within the former school grounds. The monument has additional value from the proximity of the surviving school building.Historic Interest
The memorial commemorates lives lost in the First World War and, as such, is an important part of our cultural heritage.Landmark Status
This memorial really is a community monument, standing in the grounds of the former school, which has been attended by many over the years. It was formerly accessed from the school site - the new gate on Bawtry Road makes it easier for the community to access.Images and Documents
