Description

Red brick church, opened September 1917 - contemporary with surrounding settlement of New Rossington. Closed February 2019. The Methodist Church in New Rossington is associated with the mining history of the area and is a local landmark occupying a large triangular plot. Early in the C20 the coalfields of South Yorkshire were being expanded, which resulted in the establishment of new villages near the collieries to house the huge influx of workers. New Rossington was built by the Yorkshire Main Colliery Company to serve Rossington Colliery, which became operational in 1915. The centre of the village was laid out to a circular plan with radiating roads dividing it into quadrants. The Methodist Church was built north of the circle probably in a second phase of development. It is not known precisely when the church was built as records for the church are archived and not available. However, it had certainly been erected by 1928 when it appears on the OS map. The Church is constructed in red brick and stone dressings with a small unit plain tile roof and consists of the double height main body with a staircase and gallery at the east end, and single storey attached church hall and ancillary rooms to the west. The brick is an imperial size smooth faced red brick laid in English bond by a narrow bed of mortar, which is typical of buildings of the time. The front entrance elevation has symmetrical pointed arched windows to the gallery separated by a larger arched opening, itself subdivided into 4 pointed arched windows with 3 round windows above. The church windows have leaded and stained glass in steel frames. Elsewhere the windows generally have pointed arches in brick to the church and square or segment arch heads to the windows in the ancillary buildings and are in timber or in the case of the hall replaced in upvc. The building is one of three places of worship featuring in the early plan of New Rossington although it is unclear whether the colliery contributed financially to its building as was the case with the Anglican Church at the centre. The building has local heritage interest by virtue of its townscape presence as exemplified by its massing and its front elevation and as part of the planned colliery settlement it contributes to local distinctiveness. National Archives details records held by the Doncaster Archives, which are currently either in a cave in the Cheshire Salt mines or at Harwell in Oxfordshire. Access to these will not be available till at least April 2022. Rossington Methodist Church records.
