Description

18-24 Paxton Avenue, Carcroft, Doncaster (4 individual dwellings) Prototype example of the use of Winget Ltd moulded concrete block construction, 1920. Single terrace of 4 properties built (others in the scheme were brick built). Used as an example in Winget Ltd promotional material as a proposed solution to a national shortage of bricks following the First World War. Architect was Sir Tudor Walters MP, and this was part of a scheme for 200 identical houses built in Carcroft for the Bullcroft Housing Association in 1920. Sir Tudor Walters was commissioned by the Government to produce the 1918 Tudor Walters Report, which ultimately created the 1919 Addison Act enabling local authorities to construct council housing. Tudor Walters was a colleague of Sir Arthur Markham MP who had various interests in the South Yorkshire Coalfield, including Bullcroft Main Collieries Ltd where the Markham family were major shareholders. They hired Sir Tudor Walters to design and build 200 new houses for their workforce. This scheme is unusual in that the plan was abandoned and the other 196 houses in this development featured traditional brick construction.
