Statement of Significance

Age

The church was built in 1890.

Architectural and Artistic Interest

The church was designed by architect John Dodsley Webster (1840-1913), who designed more than 15 churches among other buildings in Sheffield from his practice in St James Street. It has a 5 bay nave and bellcote at the western end. Several stained glass windows were added in memory of steelworks engineer Oliver Inman in the 1960s, designed by Francis Spear (1902-1979) whose work can be seen in a number of cathedrals.

Historic Interest

The church was built in memory of Samuel Fox soon after his death in 1887 - he was a much respected figure in the valley.

Landmark Status

The prominent position of the church on Manchester Road, just where Smithy Hill comes up from the entrance to the steelworks, means it has always been an important part of the community and is high in people's affections. Due to a falling congregation, it closed recently and plans have been approved to convert it into 5 houses.
