Characteristic Burton's Tailors building, one of two in Attercliffe (cf 783-787 Attercliffe Road), with Astoria Ballroom and billiards saloon above. Built 1931. Architect unrecorded. Foundation stone laid by Stanley Howard Burton.

Architectural and Artistic Interest

Typical example of Burton's house style, still in retail use. Mosaic floor to entrance, inscribed 'Montague Burton, the Tailor of Taste'. Original glazed panels with address numbers. Copper ventilators in the form of the Burton logo.

Group Value

Part of a sequence of formal retail buildings and banks including John Banner Ltd (620-636 Attercliffe Road), Littlewoods (602-608), Yorkshire Penny Bank (580), Sheffield Savings Bank (570).

Historic Interest

Existence of two branches of Burtons within a quarter of a mile indicates the thriving local inter-war economy.
