Characteristic Burton's Tailors building, one of two in Attercliffe (cf 582-588 Attercliffe Road/1-7 Staniforth Road), with ballroom and/or billiards saloon above. Built 1932. Designed by Harry Wilson. Foundation stone laid by Stanley Howard Burton and Raymond Montague Burton.

Statement of Significance

Architectural and Artistic Interest

Typical example of Burton's house style, still in retail use. More elaborately detailed than 582-588 Attercliffe Road. Glazed entrance retains decorative mosaic floor and plaster ceiling.

Group Value

Adjacent to Grade II listed Adelphi Cinema.

Historic Interest

Existence of two branches of Burtons within a quarter of a mile indicates the thriving local inter-war economy.

Landmark Status

Prominent because of demolition of buildings opposite. Visible from traffic lights at junction of Attercliffe Road and Newhall Road. Forms gateway to historic area between Newhall Road and Staniforth Road along with Attercliffe Baths and Adelphi Cinema.
