Statement of Significance
Asset type
Archaeological Site. Roman fort.Age
Roman (possibly 70AD)Rarity
Possibly predates Danum settlement?Group Value
The site is closely associated with later village of Long Sandall and 2 early examples of Council Housing, which are Grade 2 listed.Historic Interest
It has been proposed that the fort may have been one of the network of forts established during the initial Roman conquest of this area circa AD70.Archaeological Interest
The archaeological evaluation confirmed that cropmark features identified on aerial photographs exist as buried archaeological remains that date to the Roman period. This is very strong evidence that these features represent the remains of the defensive ditches of a Roman fort. The purpose and date of the Roman fort are not currently well understood. It has been proposed that it may have been one of the network of forts established during the initial Roman conquest of this area circa AD70. Any evidence as to the date and purpose of this fort would feed into national debates on the nature of the Roman conquest of Northern Britain. It must therefore be considered of national importance.Date Listed
