Statement of Significance
Asset type
Archaeological siteAge
The extent of the monument is well documented, and should extend to cover the whole of the water management system, the mill, and its associated housing. Industrial activity at the site has its origins in the 17th century, with the tin mill established by 1740s and operating until the end of the 19th century.Rarity
Rare example of an post-medieval tin plate manufactory, possibly the only such mill in South Yorkshire.Group Value
The mill forms an element of a connected group of contemporary 18th and 19th century industries within the Wortley area, including the nearby Wortley Low Forge and Top Forge, both of which are Scheduled.Historic Interest
The history of the mill is well documented, and benefits from the survival of a contemporary account detailing its industrial processes produced by R.R. Angerstein who toured English industrial sites in 1753-55. The foundation of the site is attributed to John Cockshutt, a notable historical figure in the region.Archaeological Interest
There are extensive standing and buried remains surviving relating to the 18th century Tin Plate Mill, ancillary structures, water management, boundaries and worker's cottages. These structures have significant evidential value due to their potential contribution to the understanding of the development of tin plate manufacturing technologies, the evolution of the site, and the lives of those who worked there.Images and Documents
