Statement of Significance
Asset type
Church with church hall attached.Age
1893 / 1906Rarity
Appears to be relatively unaltered apart from loss of its spire. Prominent on a corner site . In use as a church since its construction.Architectural and Artistic Interest
This is an interesting church in brick and terracotta, with a prominent tower. Well detailed and proportioned and well built. There was once a steeple on top of the tower but that was removed at an unknown date. Apart from this the building looks little altered. The main building probably dates from 1906 although the architect is unknown. However we know that a church/school was built on the site in 1893 by Herbert Athron so it is possible that the adjoining church hall to the left may be the original church/school although it bears little resemblance to his other churches. ( It should be noted that Pevsner says the corner church is 1893 by Athron but this is, unfortunately, possibly incorrect.)Group Value
It was built to be part of a community. The houses and streets around it are contemporary and still stand.Historic Interest
The Chequer Field Estates of Beechfield Rd./Apley Rd area were developed in 1889. Chequer Lane is today Chequer Rd. The exact date of the main church is uncertain due to conflicting information but it was there by 1906. The archives which would resolve the issue are privately held and not accessible at present.Landmark Status
Very prominent tower seen from all the surrounding area.Images and Documents
