Rarity

Originally a Wesleyan Chapel erected on the site in 1902 to designs by Gordon and Gunton. Only the tower and adjoining chapel frontage survives. Only example in Doncaster by the London architect who designed it.

Architectural and Artistic Interest

Designed by Gordon and Gunton. Josiah Gunton designed many Wesleyan chapels but there are very few known in the north of england. The church was largely demolished, probably in the 80s , and a community building/apartments built on the site. The church school, designed by JG Walker was also demolished. The impressive tower and adjoining frontage survive. Gothic style. Built by Benjamin Wortley. Conisborough pressed bricks were generaly used for facing bricks in the Wheatley area but the chapel was built using bricks from Accrington, very even in shape. The stone came from Ancaster and the carving carried out by Tom Scrivens who had been foreman carver at St George's Church. By 1902 he was 75 years old and this was to be his last work.

Group Value

The Nether Hall estate was developed in the late 19th century, mainly designed by F W Masters, with space for a church. Although the body of the church has been demolished many buildings of the period all around the church still survive.

Historic Interest

The Nether Hall estate was largely developed to designs by F.W.Masters. Space was left for a church which was obtained by the Wesleyan Methodists. They built a school, now demolished, then the church.

Landmark Status

The tower is a prominent landmark particularly on the approach from Sunny Bar but also over a wider area.
