Description
An inn has stood on this site since 1492; the present property having stood here since 1820. The historic part of the building is a 2 storey L shaped range of white painted brick (part rendered to the road) and clay pantile roof. The stacks are still present and the window openings appear historic though the windows have been replace in upvc. The form of the original building is still evident though there are single storey extensions and additional porches to the side and rear. The L shape footprint has been infilled by a flat roof single storey extension. The rear first floor windows have been replaced with modern side and top hung casements and the window proportions appear altered. Other alterations are the modern toilet windows.
The side elevation would have been a prominent and familiar landmark on travelling towards Doncaster and there is a mounting block in front of this elevation which was listed Grade 2 in 2013. Though the building itself was not considered of sufficient merit to be listed it is undoubtedly of local heritage interest as a wayside inn and familiar local landmark. The building remains the hub of the village.
