Description
Board school built in 1875, on land provided by Mr Childers of Cantley Hall. The cost to the Board was conveyancing costs only, though the cost of building was £1608 2s 6d on completion in 1876. The school opened on 9 October 1876, the foundation stone listed names of all the board members though this is now almost completely eroded. It remained a board school until 1904 when it came under the LEA of West Riding County Council. An extension of a further classroom was done in 1939 and the school remained in use until 1973 when a new school was built on the site of the old schoolhouse and the old school became a nursery. The building and associated playground has social and historic significance and is still used as nursery and preschool.
The school is typical of late C19th estate type building in red brick with stone dressings around the windows, and steep roofs of Welsh slate. It remains virtually unchanged externally and of particular note are the decorative brick details such as the dentile courses along the gables and red brick basket weave infill below yellow brick pointed arches.
