Statement of Significance
Asset type
Former Schools building.Age
1931Rarity
There are of course many schools but here most of the original quadrangle design survives, but with additions and alterations. Original perimeter wall and principal frontage.Architectural and Artistic Interest
Architects were Athron and Dyson. Frontage facing Danum Road is impressive, with pedimented doorway and two full storey recessed giant columns either side flanked by four giant pilasters. Over the central entrance is an anthemion/honeysuckle. Details are in artificial stone, but building is mainly brick. Replacement windows. Some alterations to original wings to principal frontage. The rest of the building is in the form of a quadrangle, with raised central area over each section. These areas have been altered and with additions. They are of more limited minor interest.Group Value
None although it acts as a centrepiece to the contemporary houses that surround it.Historic Interest
It represents an era of municipal improvements. The fire station, now Whitbys, at Intake is of the same period and part of this modernisation.Archaeological Interest

Landmark can be seen from surrounding main roads as well as from Danum and Welbeck Roads. It can also be glimpsed from other areas too.Images and Documents
