Buildings and Structures

A Building is a built feature with walls and a roof within the historic environment. A Structure is an above ground feature that may not have walls, and/ or a roof but like a building serves or has served a function within the historic environment. 

There are buildings and structures of different types and these could include residential, agricultural, industrial, civic, entertainment, sporting, religious or military buildings and structures. Examples of some of these types of buildings / structures that can be found in Lincolnshire are listed below.

Residential: Dwelling houses, Workers' cottages, Farmhouses, Halls, Garden Walls, etc.

Agricultural: Barns, Car sheds, Mills, Stables, Coach House, Granaries, Kennels, Pumps,  etc

Civic: Libraries, Town / Village halls, Courts, Prisons, Fire Stations, Streetlights, Fountains, Sculptures etc. 

Entertainment / Sporting: Lidos, Swimming Pools, Cinemas, Sports Grounds, Racecourses, Grandstands, Pubs, Restaurants, Shops etc.

Industrial: Workshops, Maltings, Smithys, Factories, Power Plants, Corn Exchanges, Car Showrooms, Locks  etc.

Military: Castles, Forts, Pillboxes, Radar Towers, Nissen Huts, Gun Emplacements, Drill Halls etc.

Religious: Churches, Chapels, Mosques, Quaker Houses, Gravestones, Mausoleums, Memorials etc.
