Update on the Local Heritage List Project

It’s been a whole year since the Local Heritage List was launched, and in that time we have achieved so much for the protection of heritage in South Yorkshire!  We’ve managed to get council approval for the list in all 4 Local Authorities of Barnsley, Rotherham and Sheffield and Doncaster very close to completing this process. We’ve also had over 250 nominations from across the region, of which 56, so far, have been formally listed with the rest ready to be assessed or approved by the four councils, so thank you for all of your nominations, they’ve been amazing! The other good news is that the planning departments in all four councils are now looking at how they can increase the protection for locally listed assets, which will make the list even more important for heritage protection.

As the Local Heritage List project was only funded for 1 year, we have now come to the end of that support. Don’t worry, though, this is not the end for the South Yorkshire Local Heritage List! Now that the councils have approved the list (or are about to), it is now part of the planning process and will be considered in light of applications or consultations in the future. The information will also be stored on the South Yorkshire Historic Environment Record, which can be searched by anybody with an interest in heritage at any time. We are also seeking further funding to continue the use of the Local Heritage List website, which is currently, only available until March 2023. Unless we’re successful in securing funding, the nomination process will continue directly through the local councils, so we’ll let you know if and when things change.

As we’re continuing the assessment process, we have another group of heritage assets for you all to have a look at and give us your comments on. They can either be viewed as PDFs on the Current Candidates for Assessment page or in the ‘Candidates (work in progress)’ on the list page. You can comment on the nomination entry directly or email your information for it to be added to the nomination, either way, please send us your comments by 6th November 2022. After this round we’re planning to have one more assessment round taken from the nominations submitted to the website before it closes next year. If you would like your nominations to be included in this, please make sure that you have submitted it by 11th December 2022, so there is time to have another period of public comments and additional information before they are assessed in early 2023. Please feel free to share this with anyone else who is thinking of or in the process of putting together a nomination for the local list.

Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or would like any more information on anything to do with the local list. In the meantime, thanks again for being involved with the local listing project and all the work you have put into your nominations and comments so far! As the Project Officer, I've had a brilliant time working on the Local Heritage List, but unfortunately Monday 31st October is my last day, so please bear with us for the next couple of weeks as things are handed over. I'll look forward to seeing how the list progresses in the future and hope to see you all again down the line.
